The Suzuki shop manual roughly states:
When you push the starter button, a kind of first stage timer turns on. At that same instant, voltage is applied to the compression release solenoid. A second part of the timer then energizes the starter motor and the engine cranks. Within another half second the compression release solenoid de-energizes while the engine is cranking. The Savage battery is very compact--limited cranking starting power. The starter motor is also very compact and probably could be considered undersized. Compression release is necessary but temporary, and allows the small battery and starter to get the engine spinning. All this timing stuff happens in about one second. ....Krug
